'I love you for you...'

“A beautiful person is not defined by a hair style, a pair of shoes, it’s not the logos on the T-shirt, the sport’s team on a hat, the designer’s name on a hand bag, or even how you smell.

Instead, beauty lies in who you are when no one is watching, the person you are when there’s nothing to hide behind. No amount of concealer can cover up a cantankerous heart, but all the make-up in the world can’t add a single lumen to the brightness of a beautiful soul.”

So many of us have these exceptions of ourselves, the way we should act, the way we should talk and the way we should look. Our self-image is something we create which becomes an emotional self-judgement. As humans we spend most of our time comparing ourselves to others, no matter how hard we try not too. The expectations from society often gives us the feeling of having certain roles or things we should be and look like contributing to how we perceive ourselves.

Our image and how we view ourselves is something that impacts how we feel and act. And most of the time this isn't in a positive way. As humans we are obsessed with looking good, be more toned, slimmer, muscular, taller, smaller, longer hair, shiner hair, bluer eyes, killer new gym leggings, the best dress in the room... You get my point.  We are brilliant at pointing out our flaws.

I've sure done it and still do. Spent way too long believing the people around me see me for my own insecurities towards my weight, height, eyes, hair, clothes when really they DON'T! They see so much more than what you look like or believe you look like. What they do see is something they cherish and usually what we dislike about ourselves they adore. Sometimes the features we feel insecure about are the parts they love the most.

I want to try and prove this by asking various pairs of people three questions.

1. What do you see when you look at each other?
2. What is your favourite thing about each other?
3. What is the nicest thing you have done for one another?

I asked these to friends, mother & daughter and partners. This helps you to get the perception of three various relationships between very different people. But they have one thing in common... They all care and love one another.

Carly & Leon - Soon to be married

1. What you do see when you look at Leon?

When I look at Leon I see someone hugely passionate and driven, then it’s one hell of a big grin and the most beautiful of curly locks.

2. What is your favourite thing about Leon?

My favourite thing about Leon is his humour and intelligence, he’s always looking to learn something new and yet never stops being a kid!

3. What is the nicest thing Leon has done for you?

We always try to surprise each other with little things to show we care, the nicest thing he ever did was got my best friend to make my engagement ring!

1. What do you see when you look at Carly?

I see my rock and love.

2. What is your favourite thing about Carly?

My favourite thing about C is her sense of humour.

3. What is the nicest thing Carly has ever done for you?

Hard to pick one really tbh. I would say the nicest thing C has done for me is let me follow my dreams (however crazy at times) without anything but support.

Betsie & Ashleigh - Bestfriends

1. What do you see when you look at Ashleigh?
I see a young woman with the biggest smile, which I know you don't like, but it's beautiful like the rest of you. I see someone strong, who can battle anything that comes her way and still remain positive and make sure others are okay even if you're not. You are loving, funny, and my best friend.
2. What is your favourite thing about Ashleigh?
My favourite thing about you is the fact we can sit in complete silence, but the fact your warmth is next to mine is enough to make me feel like the happiest, most content person. You have that ability when most people don't.

3. What is the nicest thing Ashleigh has ever done for you?

The nicest thing you've done for me is making me think for weeks that you couldn't make it to my 20th birthday, and then showing up at the end of my shift as a surprise and making me mouth 'what the fuck' and nearly cry! It made me so happy having you there

1. What do you see when you look at Betsie?

My first thought when I look or think of Bets is her beautiful big smile that makes her eyes light up. The way you can look at her and see she truly has no idea how utterly stunning she is, and more importantly how strong she is. She can accomplish anything and has already overcome so so much.

2. What is your favourite thing about Betsie?

The pure fact that she knows exactly what to say to me and what to do when I am struggling. We can be sat there in silence and I instantly feel comforted and safe and just carefree and normal. So, my favourite thing about her kindness and natural ability to just make me feel completely okay.

3. What is the nicest thing Betsie has ever done for you?

She saved me. Before we had ever even met or even spoken she approached me online and expressed her concern, she then guided me through the process I needed to go through and why I needed to do it. She was there to kindly answer every irritating irrational question I had to ask (and there were a lot) she was patient and helped to rationalise everything. I can 100% say I do not believe I would be where I am now without her.

Sarah & Paula - Mother & Daughter

1. What do you see when you look at your mum?

A strong, knowledgeable, inspiring, woman. Someone who takes good care of themselves & shows their natural beauty.

2. What is your favourite thing about your mum?

Her common sense! & when we're watching the football, the things she calls the players (Kev lad). Also how much shit she takes & all the hard times she's been through but isn't phased by it - inspirational.

3. What is the nicest thing you mum has done for you?

Supported me through thick & thin. Stayed by my side no matter what I'm going through or how I react to it. Always been there for me, whether that's on the phone or in person.

1. What do you see when you look at Sarah?

My beautiful daughter, and her lovely smile, gorgeous hair and eyes.

2. What is your favourite thing about Sarah?

Spending time together.

3. What is the nicest thing Sarah has done for you?

Sarah always does loads of thing to help me at home, never needing to be asked. But the best thing she ever did, not for me but for herself, was to turn her life around and get herself healthy again. Still a work in progress, but lots of small steps every day. Keep strong Sarah. We all love you.

I hope you liked this post. Let me know if you want to see more bits & bobs like this!
